What is Histrionic Personality Disorder

Histrionic personality disorder (HPD) is a mental health condition characterized by a pervasive pattern of intense and unstable emotions, a constant need for attention, and an excessive desire for approval. People with HPD often behave dramatically or theatrically to get attention. Their emotions can shift rapidly and they may have difficulty maintaining close relationships.

Personality disorders are classified into three groups based on shared symptoms. Cluster B contains a histrionic personality disorder (HPD), characterized by unexpected or dramatic conduct. “Histrionic” refers to very dramatic or melodramatic. In persons diagnosed with histrionic personality disorder:

  • Acute, unstable feelings.
  • A distorted self-image
  • Desire to pay attention
  • Dramatic or unfair operations.
  • Self-esteem is associated with approval from others.

HPD is often seen in youth or early adulthood, and it is more common in women than men. HPD is usually difficult for treatment, due to the large part of the fact that affected persons do not think they need medical treatment. These people exaggerate their sensations and detect routine, causing challenges in treatment. Typically, people with HPD seek therapy when their conduct causes sadness or anxiety. The most successful treatment is psychotherapy, medicines, or both. May be involved in effective therapy for HPD:

  • Education on histrionic personality disorder
  • Changing maladaptive patterns of thought and behavior
  • Social and emotional skill training
  • Education and help for family members
  • Developing interpersonal, communication, and coping abilities
  • Dual-diagnosis therapy
  • Giving insight into the internal nature of situations.

Individuals with HPD exhibit attention-seeking behaviors and the tendency to exaggerate sentiments, which can be triggered or exacerbated when they believe they have an audience; therefore, group and family therapy is not indicated. Furthermore, residential therapy is advised for personality disorders like HPD because the structure, routine, and monitoring enable maladaptive behaviors to be minimized and changed in real time. Residential therapy will also allow clients to get completely absorbed in the therapeutic process, free of the distractions of daily life.

Recognizing Symptoms of Histrionic Personality Disorder

Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD) is a mental health condition characterized by a comprehensive pattern of excessive attention behaviors and frequent needs for verification. People with HPD often appear highly dramatic and emotionally expressive. They may also have difficulty maintaining stable relationships due to their intense feelings and need to be the center of attention.

Recognizing Symptoms of Histrionic Personality Disorder

Here are some of the major symptoms of histrionical personality disorder:

Excessive need to note: People with HPD are often uncomfortable or out of place when they are not the center of attention. They may engage in dramatic or inappropriate behavior to notice people.

Excessive sentiment: People with HPD can express their feelings in a very exaggerated way. They can cry, laugh, or get angry very easily, and their feelings can look shallow and short-term.

Rapidly shifting emotions: The emotions of someone with HPD can change quickly and dramatically. They may seem happy one moment and angry the next, for no apparent reason.

Superficial relationships: People with HPD may have difficulty forming deep, meaningful relationships. Their relationships may be intense but short-lived, as they may quickly become bored or feel neglected.

Preoccupation with physical appearance: Individuals with HPD may be very concerned with their physical appearance and may spend a lot of time and effort on their looks.

Suggestibility: People with HPD may be easily influenced by others and may readily adopt the opinions or beliefs of others.

It is important to note that everyone who does not display some of these symptoms has a histrionical personality disorder. HPD can only be diagnosed by a qualified mental health professional.
